History and Background

Commemoration

  • commemorates the victims of the Krvavi Marš ("bloody march"). The bloody march was a retaliation of the Germans against the citizens of Šabac for their losses in the struggle for the liberation of the city. At that time, about 5,000 citizens, aged 14 to 70, were forced to cross the road from Šabac to Jarak, 23 kilometers away. A temporary concentration camp was formed in Jarak, where they were tormented for several days by thirst, hunger, beatings, and shootings over the heads. The villagers of Jarak obtained approval from the concentration camp command that they could provide assistance to the arrested. The water brought to them by the villagers from Jarak on September 28th saved many Šapacs from death.
